WIL DARCANGELO: Music
9. Let's Do It
(WIL DARCANGELO)
music and lyrics by Cole Porter
This is a fantastic example of one of Cole Porter's best songs. And another case of legendary lyric composition. Not just in the case of these verses - for these are only three of the five published verses - but for the dozens of additional verses that Cole Porter would write for parties and for friends. These often bawdy verses occasionally find their way to the internet - it was very tempting to incprporate some of them, but "What's the use of moth balls?" was about as titillating as I could get here. But know I'm thinking of them!
LET'S DO IT
Birds do it, bees do it.
Even educated fleas do it.
Let's do it, let's fall in love.
In Spain, the best upper sets do it
Lithuanians and Letts do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it,
Not to mention the Finns.
Folks in Siam do it.
Think of all the Siamese twins.
Some Argenteens without means do it.
People say in Boston even beans do it.
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
The nightingales in the dark, do it.
Larks, k-razy for a lark, do it.
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
Canaries caged in the house, do it.
When they’re out of season, even grouse do it.
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
The most sedate barnyard fowls do it
When a chanticleer cries.
High-browed old owls do it.
And they’re supposed to be wise.
Penguins in flocks on the rocks, do it.
Even little cuckoos, with their clocks, do it.
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
The dragonflies in the reeds do it,
Sentimental centipedes do it,
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
Mosquitoes, heaven forbid, do it.
So does ev’ry katydid do it.
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
The most refined lady bugs do it,
When a gentleman calls.
Moths in your rugs do it.
What’s the use of moth balls?
Locusts in trees do it, bees do it.
Even overeducated fleas do it.
Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.
