WIL DARCANGELO: Music
7. Anything Goes
(WIL DARCANGELO)
music and lyrics by Cole Porter
God, I love Cole Porter and I love this song. I love what it says about change in the world. I love that it says we've all gone to hell in a handbasket and "what a fun handbasket it is!" That's my life. Let's change the world. It's just as easy to see the lyric from this song as a judgmental view of the degradation of society. But I know Mr. Porter didn't see it that way and neither do I. Like most Cole Porter songs, there are many, many additional verses written for this song. I invite you to look them up and see for yourself.
ANYTHING GOES
In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
But now, heaven knows, anything goes.
Good authors, too, who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose.
Anything goes.
The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose.
Anything goes.
