WIL DARCANGELO: Music

6. At Last

(WIL DARCANGELO)
music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Mack Gordon
If I had understood the iconic connection that legendary performer Etta James had so indellibly imprinted on this song, I would have never attempted it. The very idea would have terrified me. It's for those same reasons that I would with great trepidation sing other songs such as "My Way" or "New York, New York." Fantastic songs, of course, but so identified with the performance of Frank Sinatra that I would be forever comparing myself to that legend. I actually first heard this song on a car commercial several years ago - only 30 seconds of it, of course - and was immediately struck by the melody. It went on a list of future songs I'd like to sing and when the gig at Café Destaré showed up that list came out. I approached the material with complete naïveté to it's history and I'm so glad I did. I don't know if I do it justice, but I know I love singing it.
AT LAST

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

At last the skies above are blue,
My heart was wrapped in clover
The night I looked at you.

I found a dream that I can speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill I’ve never known

You smiled and then the spell was cast
And here we are in Heaven
For you are mine at last.
