WIL DARCANGELO: Music
2. My Funny Valentine
(WIL DARCANGELO)
music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Lorenz Hart
I sang this song a few years ago on a smaller album project and loved the haunting chord changes. They seemed so contrary to the forgiving nature of the lyrics, it made it almost seem as if forgivness was given with a bit of sad resignation. This new album version blows me away. In preparation for performing as the featured headliner at Café Destaré, we were hired by them to perform a 4-song showcase. With no preparation on my part other than deciding what 4 songs to sing, my band and I got together two hours before the showcase and had a quick single rehearsal. This was one of the songs. We tried it out and about 2 minutes into playing it straight, the band thought we might take a whack at it with a little bit of funk style attached. I've never played it straight since. By the time came to record it, a reggae riff was added. I love this version.
MY FUNNY VALENTINE
My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you’re my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak are you smart?
But don’t change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay, little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine’s Day
