The Good-Wil Initiative
The Mission Statement: The Good-Wil Initiative fosters cultural and economic growth through social enterprise partnerships that exemplify the shared mission of "doing well by doing good." Good-Wil creates models for commercial and not-for-profit entities to collaborate for joint success. The GWI also strives to use its entrepreneurial resources to assist the communities it serves, at present the North Central Massachusetts region, in developing new ideas and programs that generate and mobilize volunteers as well as economic growth, social development, and community betterment in general. What is Good-Wil? The Good-Wil Initiative is a social enterprise. A social enterprise is a business model that uses its profits for a specific cause or mission. A contemporary example of a successful social enterprise is Newman's Own food company and foundation, created by the late Paul Newman, which has raised over 250 million dollars for thousands of charities since 1982. Rather than maximizing shareholder value, a social enterprise's main aim is to generate profit to further its social, environmental, or community goals. Not to be confused with a nonprofit or 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, this type of business model has also been referred to as a "more-than-profit" because these models fit into neither a charitable nor a commercial status. [see http://www.se-alliance.org for more information on social enterprise]. FAQs. Who created Good-Wil? The GWI is the brainchild of North Central Massachusetts community leaders Wil Darcangelo, Corinne Farinelli, and David Roth. In early 2008, Wil Darcangelo decided to use his growing popularity as a local vocalist, songwriter, and bandleader for more charitable and social purposes. He approached Corinne Farinelli, who was already mentoring him as a business development advisor, with the idea of producing a monthly charity brunch series that would feature his music. Ms. Farinelli immediately created the play on words revolving around its inspiration's namesake, the Good-Wil Sunday Music Brunch Series. Recognizing that this was a cause-marketing business profile, they immediately consulted with local cause-marketing expert David Roth on the project. David astutely recognized that "Good-Wil" was not merely the name of a brunch series, but an entire cause-marketing/social enterprise movement. What is Cause-Marketing? According to Wikipedia, cause marketing or cause-related marketing refers to a type of marketing involving the cooperative efforts of a "for profit" business and a non-profit organization for mutual benefit. The term is sometimes used more broadly and generally to refer to any type of marketing effort for social and other charitable causes, including in-house marketing efforts by non-profit organizations. The Cone Millennial Cause Study in 2006 indicated that 89% of Americans aged 13-25 would switch from one brand to another brand of comparable product and price if the latter brand was associated with a "good cause." The same study also indicated that a significant percentage surveyed would prefer to work for a company that was considered socially responsible. Some cause-marketing examples in the US. 1975 - Mariott Corporation and March of Dimes (this became the most successful promotion in the history of Chapters West of the March of Dimes) 1979 - Famous Amos Cookies and Literacy Volunteers of America (credited with alerting more people to the illiteracy problem than any other person in history) 1983 - American Express and the Statue of Liberty Restoration Project (this campaign is credited with a 17% increase in new users and 28% increase in card usage.) Today - Bono Vox and the PRODUCT (red) campaign (credited with providing free HIV retrovirals to more than 80,000 people in Rwanda, Swaziland, Ghana & Lesotho) Links: www.CauseMarketingForum.com, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cause_marketing, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_enterprise, www.csrwire.com/PressRelease.php?id=6641
